Right in the thick of award season, Santa Cruz NEXT is slowing down to appreciate Santa Cruz now, at least insofar as honoring current members who’ve done outstanding work here in the community, with the first annual NEXTies Awards. “We want to emphasize there are people here that are world–renowned, who are making a life here in Santa Cruz and enjoying every minute of it, and having a really positive impact on our community,” says Santa Cruz NEXT member and city councilman Ryan Coonerty, pausing before adding, “and we also hope that it’s going to be the best party of the year.”

He’s expecting plenty of local hotshots dressed to the nines for the ceremony honoring the four chosen winners: Danny Keith of Santa Cruz Skate and Surf Shop, astrophysicist Enrico Ramirez-Ruiz of UCSC, Reyna Ruiz of Beach Flats Community Center and Marina Sousa, owner of Just Cakes in Capitola. “I’m definitely honored,” says Sousa. “I just think everybody else that is getting this award does amazing things, and there’s part of me that feels a little bit silly because I just make cakes.”

Well, she “just makes cakes” for Oprah Winfrey and the Food Network, but Coonerty says Sousa embodies an important aspect of the NEXTies. “She’s a great example of someone who could choose to live anywhere they want, but makes their home here,” he says.

Keith is being feted not just for his professional success, but for his organization Grind Out Hunger, which incentivizes local elementary, middle and high schoolers to participate in Second Harvest food drives. “I think [Santa Cruz has] a good mixture of live and let live, at the same time encouraging entrepreneurship and out-of-the-box ideas,” says Keith, whose efforts helped to raise 116,853 pounds of food during the 2009-2010 holiday food drive. “We’re [also] very aware of our problems, and the way we deal with it is unique. We care about our neighbors in Santa Cruz. Most communities have lost that.”

Packard Fellowship winner Ramirez-Ruiz will take home a NEXTie for his success as a world-renowned astrophysicist as well as a founder of the Lamat (Mayan Star) fellowship, which provides an immersive introduction to the astrophysics program at UCSC for Hartnell Community College students. And finally, Reyna Ruiz, director of the Beach Flats Community Center, will be recognized for raising $130,000 in individual donations and grants for a mind-blowing reversal of the center’s fate after the city declared its budget crisis would shutter it. “Failure was not an option,” she says. “I don’t believe in sheer luck. You make a plan, you surround yourself with the best and the brightest and people that believe in the cause. In this case, it was social justice—the families that are the most vulnerable in the city.”

All four will receive brushed stainless steel awards created by Chris Yonge from Studio Cruz at the former Wrigley Building, which Santa Cruz NEXT spokesperson Peter Koht says will be tricked out with a digital media makeover. “It’s not going to feel like an old gum factory,” he promises.

Here’s to high NEXTpectations.

The First Annual NEXTies take place Saturday, Jan. 23, 7pm at 2801 Mission St., Santa Cruz. Tickets are $35 ($60 for two; $45 at the door) at http://www.NEXTies.Eventbright.com.

STRIKEFORCE Gina Carano vs. Cris Cyborg in San Jose California

I am not going to lie, I love MMA. Thanks to my boy Sam Diggedy , I am a student of the fight and how it all works. So when STRIKEFORCE announced the Gina Carano vs. Cris Cyborg main event all to be televised on SHOWTIME and a supporting card built with Gegard Mousasi vs. Renato “Babalu” Sobral , Gilbert Melendez vs. Mitsuhiro Ishida and Fabricio Werdum vs. Mike Kyle we were all over it.  Sam and I  arrive at the HP Pavilion and pick up media passes (representing 102.5 KDON)and head in. When we get to our seats  one of our friends Freska, is sitting right next to us. Freska is  on the radio as well, but also trains under Gilbert Melendez (she has a killer camera and will be sending me over some shots real soon). RickyDanny, Sam Diggedy and Freska all settle in for the prelims to start. The undercard fights moved really fast and somewhat set the pace for the evening, Fabricio Werdum kept that pace going with a solid defeat in round one over opponent Mike Kyle. Gilbert Melendez went after Ishida and out smarted his opponent by steadily capitalizing on his weaknesses, Ishida was bleeding out of his ear and Melendez kept attacking it. Melendez was attempting rear naked chokes in the end and finally just pounded Ishida into a round 3 TKO. Then Mousasi’s turn, he came into the ring calm cool and collected, almost too clam…it was apparent “Babalu” had the energy and was convinced he was ready, well that was exactly the opposite with Gegard coming out and quickly going to the ground and laying a multiple punches to finally knock “Babalu” out cold in one minute flat.

Next up was the main card…the fight of the night Gina Carano vs. Cris Cyborg. Carano while definitely adored by the crowd, was in for a lane change. Right out of the gate Cyborg was striking and dominating the fight, constantly pushing Carano back. Blow after blow was striking Carano, at one point Carano had managed to get to the ground and control Cyborg momentarily…however that quickly changed and Cyborg just unleashed a fury of fists on Carano causing the ref to call the fight with 1 second left in round 1.  And like I stated with the undercards setting the pace, fight night ended with the main card only going 1 round.

Some side notes, Herschel Walker was in the house admitting to his MMA interests including current training…could we see the former Heisman trophy winner in the ring??? Stranger things have happened.

The presser after was solid, only the winners came out with Scott Coker and interacted well with the media. Coker led the presser with the announcement of Dream and STRIKEFORCE joining forces and sharing fighters. This opens the door to all sorts of great future match ups. Over all…I give the fights tonight an A+. Check out the video’s and photo’s below.

All of this was shot with an iPhone for pics and Nokia N95 for video. Enjoy!

Birthday Party KDON, MOTIV, Brooke Hogan and RickyDanny

I have a birthday…every year I have one. This one was different. RickyDanny has been on The Morning Madhouse for almost 2.5 years now and we figured lets blow it up. The week was right, we had Brooke Hogan in town the club was MOTIV and is the place to be in Santa Cruz.  It started out with the VIP invite only from KDON, limited guest list for RickyDanny and MOTIV, all in all we invited 220 females with 4o males…can you say talent? Sam Diggedy, White Menace, Boy Toy Bobby, Showbiz and our crew rolled up to downtown Santa Cruz at the same time Brooke Hogan showed up. The VIP line was down the street and people were looking good and ready to party.  Once inside the music was jumping and people were already gettin tipsy…did I mention it was only 10pm.  Juan Burgundy was throwing heat on the turn tables as the ratio of girls to guys was the best I had ever seen in Santa Cruz. Straight up White Menace hit me the next morning after sleeping on Sam Diggedy’s bathroom floor “Blood, Santa Cruz blows San Francisco out of the water for talent, hands down the most hot chicks I have ever seen in a club at one time”…yep…that’s how we do it. Brooke was cool as hell, even with all the haters, MOTIV was packed till closing and not one problem. KDON, RickyDanny and SC know how to throw a party, next time we mention it….you might want to make sure you are there…here are some pics.
